SUDAN PEOPLE’S LIBERATION MOVEMENT
PRESS STATEMENT ON THE CURRENT POLITICAL CRISIS
JUBA, 22nd October 2007
Members of the Media,
Good afternoon.
1. The SPLM IPB decision to recall its Ministers from the Government of National Unity and not to resume their duties till the outstanding issues are addressed is a unanimous decision that is widely supported by all members of the SPLM and by the majority of the Sudanese people.
2. This decision is a sign of our dissatisfaction and a protest to lack of the implementation of critical provisions of the CPA by NCP.
3. This decision is a call to the Sudanese people, the region and international community to rescue the CPA and support its implementation.
4. The SPLM remains committed to full implementation of the CPA and we do not wish at any moment to contemplate the collapse of the CPA. We call on the National Congress Party to address the genuine issues as presented to them by the SPLM.
5. The SPLM is simply asking the NCP to resolve the following critical issues and aspects of the CPA as minimum for the return of the SPLM team to the GONU:
• Acceptance of the report of Abyei Boundary Commission (ABC) and immediate establishment of Abyei Administration.
• Immediate withdrawal of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) from Southern Sudan and Abyei Area as per provisions of the CPA.
• Reviewing of the oil sector and engagement of GoSS so as to ensure transparency in this important sector.
• Availing the resources necessary for the North/South Border Committee.
• Availing the necessary resources to the forthcoming population census and reinstating questions related to ethnicity and religion to the census questionnaire.
• Initiating a process of the national reconciliation and healing throughout the country.
• Reinstating the SPLM ministers who were wrongly dismissed in Senar and El Gezira States.
• Apology from the National Minister of Interior on their recent raids of the SPLM offices in Khartoum and to bring the culprits of these acts into the books of law.
• Immediate release of unlawfully detained citizens and political opponents.
6. I call on President Bashir and the leadership of the NCP to exercise responsibility and wisdom in managing this crisis so that we ensure the building of peace and stability in the country by implementing the CPA.
7. I personally call upon all the Sudanese people to remain calm and work for peace and I assure you that the SPLM under my leadership will not allow the deterioration of the situation to war whatsoever the case. The SPLM is for freedom, peace, and prosperity for all the Sudanese people.
